What each visit measures

Six measurements, taken the same way each time

Using the same instruments each time lets us compare this visit with the last, and say what changed.

  • Prescription

How nearsighted each eye is, with and without drops where they are needed.

  • Eye length

How long each eye is, measured without touching it. Growth in length is what myopia control tries to slow.

  • Curvature of the front of the eye

Needed for fitting lenses and for checking how a lens sits.

  • Eye health

The front and back of the eye, checked by the doctor at least once a year.

  • Comfort and routine

How lenses, drops or glasses fit into school days, sports and sleep.

  • Your questions

What came up at home since the last visit, answered by the doctor.

How often

A schedule that flexes with your child

  1. The first month01

    Starting

An evaluation, a short start visit, and a first check two to four weeks later.

  2. The first years02

    Settled in

A progress check about every six months, with a yearly eye health exam.

  3. Any visit03

    Changing course

If the measurements or your family's needs change, we talk about continuing, changing or stopping. Results vary, and a change of plan is normal.

Beyond the clinic

Daily habits, and what research does and does not show

We talk about time outdoors and breaks from near work, because families ask. Research points to some benefit for some children, and it does not replace an option or promise a result. The doctor explains what is known and what is not.

Four children run away from the camera across a sunny grass field with trees behind them.
  • Sudden vision loss, flashes of light, a curtain over your vision, a chemical splash or an eye injury needs care now. Call our office right away or go to an emergency room. If you can't reach us, call 911.

About the schedule

Can we change how often we come?

Yes. The doctor sets a schedule that fits your child's eyes, and we adjust it when the measurements or your family's routine change.

When does treatment stop?

There is no fixed date. The doctor talks with you about stopping when the eyes seem to have settled, and results vary.
