Myopia care

A myopia evaluation, step by step

For children and teens whose distance vision is blurry or getting worse, and for parents who are nearsighted and want to know what to watch.

The evaluation is one longer visit. We measure, we check the health of the eyes, and then we go through the options with you and your child. Nothing starts that day unless you want it to.

What to bring

  • Your child's current glasses or contact lenses, and their cases

  • A list of any eye drops or medicines your child uses

  • Your vision plan and medical insurance cards

  • Questions, written down or on your phone

At the visit

What happens, in four steps

The visit takes about 75 minutes.

  1. About 20 minutes01

    Measure

We check how nearsighted each eye is and how long each eye is, with instruments that do not touch the eye.

  2. About 25 minutes02

    Check eye health

The doctor looks at the front and back of the eyes, with dilating drops only when they are needed.

  3. About 20 minutes03

    Go through the options

The doctor lays out each option, what the FDA has said about it and what it asks of your family. Results vary, and we say so.

  4. About 10 minutes04

    Take it home

You get a written summary of the measurements and the options, to read at your own pace.

Billing

How the visit is billed

  • A vision plan or medical insurance

A myopia evaluation checks for an eye condition, so it is often billed to medical insurance, and some parts may go to a vision plan. We check your benefits before the visit where we can.

  • If you pay yourself

We give you a written estimate before the visit. Our page on how fees work explains what is billed separately.

  • Sudden vision loss, flashes of light, a curtain over your vision, a chemical splash or an eye injury needs care now. Call our office right away or go to an emergency room. If you can't reach us, call 911.

Questions about the evaluation

Does my child need drops in the eyes?

Only when the doctor needs a closer look at the back of the eye. The doctor tells you first, and explains what to expect afterward.

Do we have to choose an option that day?

No. Many families take the written summary home. We are glad to answer questions by phone.

Who does the evaluation?

Dr. Keyes or Dr. Pillai, both Doctors of Optometry. You can ask for either when you book.
