Eye exams
A complete exam of how your eyes see and how healthy they are
For children, teens and adults, whether or not you wear glasses.
A comprehensive exam checks how clearly you see, how your eyes work together and the health of the front and back of each eye. It finds changes in a prescription, and it can find eye conditions before they cause symptoms.
What to bring
Current glasses and contact lenses
A list of medicines you take
Your vision plan and medical insurance cards

At the visit
What happens at an exam
Most exams take 45 minutes to an hour.
- 01
History
We ask how your eyes feel, what you do all day and what runs in the family.
- 02
Vision and focus
We measure how clearly you see and find the lenses that give you the sharpest view.
- 03
Eye health
The doctor looks at the front and back of the eye, with dilating drops when they are needed.
- 04
What we found
The doctor explains the results, and you leave with a copy of your prescription.
How often
An age guide
Children and teens
Once a year, and more often for a child in the myopia program.
Adults
Every one to two years, as your doctor advises.
Anyone with a change
Sooner, if you notice squinting, headaches after reading or sitting very close to screens.
Billing
Which part goes to which plan
A routine exam
Usually billed to a vision plan.
A visit for an eye problem or a follow-up
Usually billed to medical insurance. Many visits mix both, and the office explains which part goes where.
About eye exams
Do I need an exam if I see fine?
Yes. Some eye conditions cause no symptoms early on, and a child may not know their vision is blurry.
Will my eyes be dilated?
Sometimes. The doctor tells you first and explains what to expect, such as light sensitivity for a few hours.
